TPLO Surgery for ACL injuries
Recently Elvis was diagnosed with ACL injury and underwent TPLO surgery. The trick with that type of surgery is keeping
your dog sedate enough that he doesn't either injure the leg before it is completely healed and also to keep from injuring
the "good leg".
In Elvis' surgery, the lower leg bone was cut and the angle of the top part of
the bone adjusted so that his 2 leg bones meet more effectively. A metal plate was installed with screws. His
knee now sports about a 6 inch scar. The first couple of days the bruising from surgery was awful to look at but the
bruising went away quickly and within a week he was actually putting weight on that leg again. He had to be walked using
a special dog sling harness we made for him to assist in walking. He actually had to have 2 slings so that one could
be used while the other was being washed.
Seeing him walk now at 3 weeks post-surgery makes us realize how much
his leg had been bothering him before the surgery and we just didn't know it. Unfortunately today it looks as if he
may have overworked his "good" leg. We're hoping it was just strained and with a few hours rest, he'll be
feeling better. If not, then it's back to the vet to see if the operated on leg is healed sufficiently to allow TPLO
surgery on the leg that has now become the "sore" leg.
On a business front though, the need to limit
Elvis' activities has given us the free time to work more on new embroidery designs. New photos will be posted soon
of the projects
