Nosey at rest
webassets/Nosey_comfortable.jpg

Update March 20 - We picked up Nosey's ashes yesterday.  We had ordered an urn that was a life-sized black labrador.  When we got home we put the urn in the living room.  Our yellow lab Elvis (who was Nosey's littermate) came into the living room - spied the black dog at the other end and literally bounced his way over tail wagging like crazy.  He was quite confused when he realized the black dog wasn't his sister but a statue.  It about broke our hearts.  Made us wish all the more that we could explain to our 2 remaining dogs, why Nosey is no longer with us.  Anyway enough of the sadness.  Please continue to keep us in your prayers as we learn to live a life without Nosey.  Her loss has definitely been tough to take but with God's help and your prayers, we'll get thru this.

R.I.P.  Nosey Brockus  November 6, 2001 - March 10, 2009

It is with deep sorrow that we share the news that Nosey lost her battle with lymphosarcom this morning.  She truly was a great girl and was the love of our lives.  She definitely taught us to value every day as a gift.  Words cannot express the pain we feel and ask that you keep us all in your prayers.

March 10 - Update  Please keep Nosey in your prayers.  Her energy level has hit a new low.  Yesterday we had to hand feed her to get her to eat.  Today she won't even eat from our hands.  We're going to try to get in to see Dr Lucroy today.  Hopefully he can make her more comfortable.

March 8 Update  The last couple of weeks have been a little rough on Nosey.  She had new chemo drugs which seemed to make her very tired for the first few days after treatment.  She did seem to perk up a bit late last week.  On Thursday she went back for bloodwork and Dr Lucroy is somewhat concerned about her platelet count.  20 is borderline low and Nosey's platelet count was 16.
Dr Lucroy recommended that we keep her from "rough-housing" with Elvis and Buster.  He wanted us to make sure she got lots of rest.  She had pretty significant bruising on her belly from the last chemo treatment but that is a normal side effect of this particular medicine.  We were told to keep an eye out for any unusual bleeding.  She seems to have very short bursts of energy followed by several hours of rest.  She as all week off and goes back for another chemo treatment on Monday March 16.  Please continue to keep her in your prayers.

February 14 Update - Last Monday, Dr Lucroy upped Nosey's dosage of Mustargen in the hopes that since she is toleraing the medication well, that the increased dosage would finally reduce the size of her lymph glands.  The new dosage caused a bit of diahhrea for the first couple of days. Dr L prescribed some pills and her stools are back to normal - unfortunately the lumps are still not going down any.  On Monday Feb 16th, Dr Lucroy will try a new family of drugs.  Hopefully the lymph nodes will respond to the new medicine.  On the bright side, Nosey continues to act normal and has plenty of energy.  She really is enjoying having mom home all the time now.

February 9 Update - Nosey was supposed to just be going in for a checkup today since the vet had upped her Mustargen dosage last week.  Unfortunately, Dr Lucroy was still not happy that the lumps on her lymph glands are still swollen so he gave her another treatment of Mustargen at an even higher dosage.  She goes back in a week.  If the glands are still swollen next week, then we'll move on to another type of medication to see if that works better.  Up until today's treatment she hade been doing very well, but after today's treatment she is a bit tired.  Hopefully she'll bounce back to her normal self in the next couple of days.  Please continue to keep her in your prayers.

Jan 28 Nosey Update - Nosey has began taking chemo treatments again.  Additionally she is on Prednisone to try and reduce the swelling of her lymph nodes.  While its taken longer for the swelling to go down this time, at least we've started to see some reduction in the size of the lumps.  She continues to act fine and except for an increased tendency to snore, she seems to be doing well all things considered.  Because we're on a whole new treatment protocol, we're not real sure how long the treatment schedule will entail.  Dr Lucroy will be upping her dosages of Mustargen due to her positive response on the previous treatments.  She also continues with several other meds.  To look at her, its hard to believe we've been battling the cancer for over 2 years now.  We are humbled by all Nosey's friends who continue to keep her in their prayers.

Jan 17 Update  Nosey had her chemo treatment Mustargen on Tuesday.  We were hoping for quick results but unfortunately the lump has not reduced very much in size.  Thankfully, however, she still acts normal for the most part and does not appear to be in any pain or discomfort.  She tires a bit easier than normal but we are attributing that to the Prednisone.  Please keep her in your prayers as she is scheduled for her next chemo on Tuesday Jan 20.

Jan 13 Update - During last Thursday's vet visit, Dr Lucroy confirmed that Nosey's cancer had returned.  She was given some Prednisone and Vinblastine to tide her over until some new chemo drugs could be located for her.  The new pills arrived on Monday the 12th and today she is getting an iv chemo treatment of a totally new (to her) medicine.  We'll try this medicine for a couple of weeks and see if it is able to reduce the swelling any.  If it doesn't, Dr L has several other drug families that he can try with her.

Jan 6 - Update Well it seems like the lump on Nosey's neck is getting bigger.  She has an appointment with her oncologist on Thursday.  Please continue to keep her in your prayers.  If it is determined that the new lumps are the cancer returning rather than just a simple infection, her prognosis may be bleak.

Jan 4 Update  Earlier today we noticed a lump near the lymph glands in Nosey's neck.  We are keeping an eye on it for a couple of days but if the lump grows in size, we'll have to head back to the vet.  Please keep her in your prayers that we are just being overprotective and that the lump we noticed today is nothing serious.

Dec 29 Nosey had her 1 month checkup.  All appears to be going good.  The next month will be critical for her.  If she can make it til the end of January, Dr Lucroy says she will be considered in full remission.

Nov 24 webassets/Nosey_nov08.JPGTom just called.  Nosey has now completed her chemo treatment.  Dr Lucroy says they are now thinking that Nosey will be one of their long-term success stories.  They had a little party for her at the clinic and gave her a new bandana.  (See photo).  She goes back in a month for a re-check but we can definitely say our prayers have been answered.  Thanks for all of your support.

As I may have mentioned, we had submitted Nosey’s photo and story to an organization involved in spreading the awareness about Canine Cancer.

November 11 - Nosey Update had her chemo treatment earlier today.  There was a new vet tech helping today.  The new tech was very impressed that not only did Nosey know the standard routine for the carotid vein blood draw but she also laid quietly while they administered the chem IV without fuss or hassle.  In fact the tech was so enamored with Nosey that she "did Nosey's nails".  Talk about a pampered dog.  Now even strangers are pampering her.  She has 1 more chemo treatment 2 weeks from today and then she'll be finished with this treatment schedule.

Health Update  October 28  Nosey had another chemo treatment today.  Her numbers continue to look good.  She's picked up about 3 pounds sincer her last visit which is a cause for rejoicing.  She has 2 more treatments and then she will conclude this treatment regimen.  She will officially be in remission.  At that point then we just have to pray that her remission period lasts a long time.  The new medications she is currently on, however, seems to be agreeing with her.  She is energetic and playful - almost back to her "pre-cancer" disposition.  We continue to be amazed at her spirit.
Update October 14 Nosey had another chemo treatment today.  Dr Lucroy says her numbers still look good.  She has lost some weight from her last visit 2 weeks ago.  Last week she went on vacation with Tom, 2 friends of ours and myself.  She had a great time and made lots of new friends.

Health Update – Nosey - September 29
Nosey has reached her lifetime dosages on all of the “tried and true” chemo medicines.  She is now being treated with other meds that are a bit more pricey and do not have the same track record for success.  Mitoxantrone is said to have some very severe side effects but for now she is doing amazingly well.  Her spirit is a joy to behold.  Your continued prayers on her behalf are appreciated.

Update Sept 9 Nosey's leg continues to improve.  Hair is actually starting to grow back now that she's gone 2 weeks without scratching.  We are starting to leave her alone for 10-15 minutes at a time and so far, she hasn't started the licking and scratching again.

Update September 2 - Nosey's leg has made vast improvement over the last 2 weeks.  She has stopped licking her leg and the hair on her leg is actually starting to grow back.  She still wears her sock at night just to be on the safe side but talk about a true answered prayer!   Last week she did have a small urinary problem where crystals were forming in her bladder and causing irritation.  Plus her allergies have started causing some discomfort.  She had rubbed a raw spot on her face and hindside.  She is on medication right now for both issues.  We appreciate all your continued prayers that we can get the allergies and crystals cleared up now and go back to a "normal" lifestyle :-)

Nosey was particularly glad to meet mom's friend Amy.  Amy came bearing gifts and what girl doesn't love to get presents?

August 14 - Update
Her leg still continues to be a source of concern.  While she was waiting in a crate for her bloodwork results prior to being given the chemo, she was able to pull her bandage off and get her leg bleeding again.  Every few days we seem to make progress on getting the leg healed, then in seemingly an instant when left unattended for a short time period, she is back at the leg chewing.
On the good news side, however, her bloodwork #s are looking very good.  Dr. Lucroy says has a new medication they will be giving her on 8/28.  the new medication is an oral medication but different than the oral meds we tried earlier this year.  For the balance of this protocol regimen, her treatment plan may consist of alternating oral and intraveineous medications.
Dr Lucroy is still very positive about her progress and he anticipates she will still be well enough to travel this fall on a planned family vacation.  For now, we are living each day as if it is our last, but praying that we have many more months with her.

August 10 - Update

This past week we took an inaugural trip in our RV with Nosey.  She had a wonderful time especially when she realized there were birds and squirrels on the outside of the windshield.  She was "styling" in her new pink ribbon embellished sock.  A girl has to have a little pink to show how delicate she is.  :-)

She still tries to lick her leg whenever she is left unattended for any length of time but overall her disposition is still great.  We have opted not to go with the Elizabethian collar thinking if we used something like that she might become so stressed as to induce a stress seizure.  She does get a bit more tired than she used to but for now we are cherishing each day we have with her.

August 1 - Update

Nosey had a setback over the past week.  The leg that we thought had been close to healing has been reopened a few times and now she is back to the point where she has to wear both a bandage and a sock.  We had tried to start weaning Nosey away from being with Tom 24/7 and had had pretty good luck until this past Sunday.  For whatever reason, she's decided that the leg needs her attention and thus she must once again have a caretaker with her at all times.

On the chemo side of things, we are no longer getting the bright and sunny outlook we once had from Nosey's oncologist. Tom says whenever he asks them about Nosey and winter vacation “they get squirmy”.  As he understands it, she is doing well and the 8/14 treatment should be fine.  The 8/28 date, however is when she is scheduled for the medication that they are telling us she has already received maximum dosage allowable.  If they give it to her again on 8/28 per the protocol plan, according to the drug manufacturer she is at a high risk for heart failure.

At this point we don’t know what they will do on 8/28.  Could be that because she’s doing so well they may decide it’s worth the risk to go ahead and give that particular medicine to her again then again they may have another drug they can substitute.  We just don’t know.  Tom thinks they are “preparing us” for worst case scenario but we’ll see when the time comes.

For now, with the exception of her leg, Nosey continues to act perfectly normal but we would certainly appreciate your prayers especially on August 28th

July 14 Update
At the beginning of July we had a slight setback when we tried to let Nosey's leg "air out".  So we've gone to keeping a sock on her leg full time.  The leg is doing very well and we think it may soon start to grow hair again.  Our concern is that once we eliminate the sock, she'll still lick so we ask for continued prayers that she "forgets" to lick the leg.

Her spirits on the other hand are great.  She is actually gaining weight!  She loves all the special attention she is getting these days.  She went with Tom and I to Camping World the other day.  The Camping World store and service area are pet friendly so she decided to check it out.  She was a big hit.  Everyone was curious about the sock on her leg but then she's always been a real attention getter so she's come to expect being the center of attention.

June 26 - Update
Nosey had her 5 (out of 16) chemo treatments today.  Her bloodwork numbers were good.  Dr Lucroy is very pleased with the healing progress of her leg.  About 2/3rds of it is looking real good.  The top 1/3, however, will still need watching closely.  If we can keep her from reopening the wound, hopefully soon we'll be able to leave her for short periods of time.  For now, we are staying with her 24/7.

June 24 - Update
We've given up trying to let Nosey run around without her bandages.  She cannot be trusted to not chew on her leg.  We are keeping it bandaged 24/7 now and she is with either Tom or Sue at all times.

She did want to lodge a complaint for anyone that will listen:  "A girl can't get a little privacy these days!"  She goes back to the vet on Thursday for her next chemo and to have her leg looked at again.

June 17 - Update
Nosey's leg continues to be a constant source of irritation for her.  We've tried covering bandage with socks and children's leggings with limited success.  Apparently the leg still "itches".  She must be kept under close observation or she pulls the bandage and sock off and gets the leg to bleeding.

It's troublesome that she seems to be handling the chemo just fine but this skin irritation has proved so elusive to get under control.  Bitter apple instead of being a deterrent has no effect.  Because Nosey is so sensitive, we were trying to avoid having to use an E-collar on her.  She goes back to the vet tomorrow for a checkup and we hope that maybe Dr Lucroy can prescribe something to relieve the itching.

June 10, 2008 - Update

Nosey had her 3rd chemo last Thursday.  To make a long story short, apparently some of the meds squirted onto her skin when they did the IV and/or she is apparently having an allergic reaction to it.  I guess the odds are finally catching up to her after having had 19 treatments.  Her leg looks like she has a really bad “hot spot”.  She licks the spot – bacteria sets in which then makes the spot more itchy which cause her to lick it more etc etc – vicious circle.

Being the spoiled and stubborn girl that she is, she tries to take the bandage off herself.  She pouts when we make her have a bandage on.  We’d thought about an Elizabethan collar but Tom thinks that she would stress out too much with that.  The bandage troubles her enough as it is.

Tom and I have been taking turns “puppy sitting” giving her some hours of the day without the bandage.  The bandage helps guard against infection that could potentially cause other issues so we’ve tried to balance it out.  Please continue to keep Nosey in your prayers that she will leave the bandage on and allow the wound to heal.

May 27, 2008 - Update -
Nosey's chemo treatment today has been postponed.  Apparently her bloodwork has indicated that her immune system is too low to take a chance on treatment.  She has been put on antibiotics and another round of Prednisone.  Her chemo treatment has been rescheduled until Thursday.

May 19, 2008 - Update -
Nosey went for interim bloodwork today.  Apparently the "pills" chemo is not getting rid of the cancer as hoped.  She must go back to the intraveinous chemo (which is harder on the body) starting today.  Please keep her in your prayers.  She doesn't realize how sick she is.

May 8, 2008 - Update -
Nosey had her 2nd dose of chemo yesterday even though her liver function numbers were high.  We're keeping an eye on her to make sure that this dose doesn't do too much damage to her liver.  Apparently figuring out correct dosage & medication which will work with the individual dog is a fine art.

Dr Lucroy, however, has had lots of experience treating dogs with lymphosarcoma and he still tells us that he has a DEEP medicine chest to try if this week's medications cause any problems.  Thanks for keeping her in your prayers.

February 2008 - Update - Nosey has not had any more seizures and seems to be doing well.  She goes back to her oncologist in March for a routine followup visit.  Please continue to keep her in your prayers.

January 2008 - Update -
Nosey had a seizure early in the month.  The seizure only lasted about 5 minutes and then she was back to normal and has had no further episodes.  Dr. Lucroy, her oncologist, says that the seizure could be a result of the chemo but unless seizures start coming very often, the best treatment option is not medication but just keeping her safe & secure during any future seizures.  She returns to the vet in March for her 6 month followup visit.

December 2007 - Update -
Dec 24 marks the 1 year anniversary since that day we first noticed the lump on Nosey.  She has taught us this year that life is about giving with no expectations of getting anything in return.  In today's society, giving selflessly is almost thought to be "too good to be true".  As we celebrate the birth of Christ this year, we remember the gift God has given us of his Son.  Thank goodness God's gift to us is good and is true!

April 14, 2008 - Update - Results of the needle biopsy came back indicating that the Lymphosarcoma has returned.  This time Nosey's chemo treatment involves taking "chemo pills".  This treatment plan will last for about 15 weeks.

For those that wish to follow her progress, we've started a page just for Nosey.  We're hoping with this new treatment plan to get another 6 to 18 months with her.

Hard to believe she was ever so small as to fit inside a cat igloo but as we've always said.  She got her name honestly.  She has always been more curious than a cat ever thought about being--hence the name "Nosey".

March 6, 2008 - Update - Nosey's oncologist found a couple of lymph nodes enlarged during her visit.  50/50 chance it could just be an infection or lymphosarcoma returning.  Please keep her in your prayers.

September 2007 - Update - Nosey had her two month post-treatment checkup and has officially been declared "in remission". She doesn't have to see her oncologist for 6 months. Thanks to all who have prayed for her and our family. We will post news if her prognosis changes but for now she is healthy and happy. Nosey wanted us to say a special thanks to all her friends at Eagle Creek Animal Clinic and Indiana Veterinary Specialties for their great care.

August 2007 - Update -
Nosey is currently in remission from Lymphosarcoma. Her one month post-treatment checkup went well. Each day she continues to teach us that every day is a gift - how we use that gift us up to us. We encourage you to live each day as if it may be your last. Don't let the sun go down with regret for the way the day was spent.

July 2007 - Update - Nosey finishes chemo treatment

Dec 24, 2006 NOSEY
, Sue's Handyman Shop Dog  was diagnosed with lymphosarcoma and began chemo therapy treatments on Dec 30, 2006. Thanks to all who have sent her your prayers and to Dr. James Baughn at Eagle Creek Animal Clinic and Dr. Lucroy and their entire staff for their unwaivering compassion and help.
